Pac-10 Dominates Big-10 at USC Track Meet

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Pacific-10 Conference represented by USC and Arizona dominated the "Pac-10 vs. Big Ten Four-Way Meet" hosted by the Trojan men's and women's track and field teams on Saturday (April 4) at Cromwell Field. The Big Ten Conference's representatives were Michigan and Ohio State.
Unfortunately, nearly all of the events took place under rainy skies and cold conditions. The presence of rain is believed to be a first-ever occurrence for a track meet at Cromwell Field. "If not for the rain, we would have had some outstanding performances," USC director of track and field Ron Allice said. "We had some exceptional athletes on this field today." The No. 4-ranked Arizona won the men's four-way meet, scoring 78 points to No. 2-ranked USC's 71, Michigan's 35 and Ohio State's 19. The Wildcat men also defeated the other three teams in separate dual meets (Arizona 87, USC 75; Arizona 100, Michigan 54; Arizona 109, Ohio State 41). The rest of the men's dual meet scores were -- USC, 96, Michigan 62; USC 104, Ohio State 52; Michigan 94, Ohio State 49. The No. 7-ranked Women of Troy won the four-way women's meet, scoring 76 points to Michigan's 49, Arizona's 43 and Ohio State's 28. USC's women also went 3-0 in the duals (USC 84, Arizona 58; USC 83, Michigan 60; USC 89, Ohio State 45). The rest of the women's dual meet scores were -- Michigan 93, Arizona 50; Arizona 70, Ohio State 68; Michigan 91, Ohio State 53.
In Pac-10 vs. Big Ten scoring, the Pac-10 men won 136-33 and the Pac-10 women won 108-54.
Three athletes -- Michigan's Kevin Sullivan, and USC's Torri Edwards and Natasha Danvers -- scored double victories. Sullivan, a three-time NCAA champion and the current holder of two Canadian records, won the 1,500-meters in a new Cromwell Field record time of 3:43.62 (old mark, 3:43.95, Mebrahtom Keflezighi, UCLA, May 3, 1997). A little more than an hour later, Sullivan took the 800-meters in 1:49.24. Edwards, who has already run 11.10w and 11.53 over 100-meters this season, won both the 100- and 200-meters in impressive fashion. She blazed to victory in the 100-meters in 11.2h and took the 200-meter title in 23.26 (running into a -1.10 wind). Edwards also ran the second leg of USCs winning 400-meter relay team, which ran 44.13. "Torri is really running at a different level right now," Allice said.
Danvers won both of the women's hurdle events, taking the 100-meter hurdles in a season-best 13.67 (NCAA provisional mark) and the 400-meter hurdles in 57.9h.
The "Pac-10 vs. Big Ten Four-Way Meet" was part of the U.S. Collegiate Track & Field Series put on by the U.S. Track Coaches Association and USA Track & Field. The Series aims to revive the American public's interest in the sport by conducting 20 scoring meets during the spring on campuses throughout the nation, featuring 65 of the nation's premier track and field programs.
Ohio State was making its first appearance in a dual meet against USC in Los Angeles since a Jesse Owens-led Buckeye team lost to the Trojans on May 25, 1935, at the Coliseum. And the last time Michigan faced USC in Los Angeles was on April 29, 1951, in a tri-meet with Illinois, which was also own by the Trojans.
