Allice, Leach, Gallien Receive Contract Extensions

LOS ANGELES--USC director of track and field Ron Allice, Trojan men's head tennis coach Dick Leach and Women of Troy head tennis coach Richard Gallien have received contract extensions, USC athletic director Mike Garrett announced today.
Allice's extension runs through 2004, while Leach's and Gallien's run through 2003.
Also, Eric Amend, a 4-year letterman at USC (1985, 1987-89) who won the 1989 NCAA doubles title with Byron Black, has been named the assistant coach for the women's tennis team. A participant in the 1984 Olympics, he spent 5 years as a touring pro and then coached with the U.S. Tennis Association.
Amend takes over for Glenn Michibata, who becomes the assistant for the men's team after serving as the women's assistant in 1998. Michibata replaces Ryan McKee, who resigned after 4 years as the Trojan men's assistant and will enter private business after receiving his master's degree in business administration from USC in 1998. Allice, who has revived USC's track and field program in his 4 years at Troy, has guided the Trojan men each year to Top 10 finishes at the NCAA meet (including seventh in 1998) and the Women of Troy to a pair of Top 10 NCAA placings (including fifth in 1998). He led the 1997 Trojan men's team to its first Pac-10 title since 1977 and the 1996 women's team to its first-ever Pac-10 crown. He was the 1996 Pac-10 Women's Coach of the Year and the 1997 Pac-10 Men's Coach of the Year. Leach has led USC to 3 NCAA team titles (1991-93-94) while winning 81.3% of his dual matches (458-105) in his 19-year Trojan career. Eight of his other USC teams have finished fourth or better at the NCAA Championships. He has been named Pac-10 Coach of the Year 4 times (1987-91-92-94). In 1996, Gallien took over a USC women's tennis program that had just 1 winning season in the previous 5 years and guided the Women of Troy into the NCAA tourney. In his 3 years at USC, Gallien's teams have won 39 dual matches.
