LOS ANGELES - Steve Greatwood, USC's offensive line coach the past 2 seasons, has been relieved of his duties, Trojan head coach Paul Hackett announced today.
"I've looked very carefully at the past two years and some things weren't going how I wanted them, so I need to make some changes," said Hackett. "I wasn't comfortable with the development and progress of our offensive line. That's not a reflection on Steve Greatwood, who is an outstanding coach and recruiter. But we weren't growing and improving on the offensive line."
Hackett did not name a replacement, saying "I'll give myself a couple of weeks. I might slide some current staff members around or look at other options."
He also did not rule out other staff changes, targeting the end of the year for any other decisions.
Greatwood has 20 years of coaching experience, including 15 years (1980-94) at Oregon, 2 seasons with the St. Louis Rams (1995-96) and a year at Maryland (1997) before coming to USC in 1998.
USC went 6-6 in 1999, but closed the season on a 3-game winning streak, including a 17-7 win over UCLA to snap an 8-year losing skid to the Bruins and a 45-19 win over No. 25 Louisiana Tech last Friday. In 1998, Hackett's first year at Troy, the Trojans were 8-5 and played in the Sun Bowl.
