LOS ANGELES - USC senior tailback Chad Morton has been named a 1999 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete, entitling him to an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship.
Morton, a sociology major with a 3.43 GPA, will be honored at a Dec. 7 dinner in New York City when the Foundation inducts its latest College Hall of Fame class.
Morton is one of 15 collegiate seniors to win the award in 1999, including just 9 from Division I-A. He is the 12th Trojan to be so honored (the fourth in the past six years).
In 1999, his second year as USC's starting tailback, Morton has run for 637 yards (4.2 average) and 8 touchdowns on 151 carries, plus has caught 12 passes for a 5.2 average, returned 11 kickoffs for a 16.7 average and 2 punts for a 7.5 average.
He is 13th on USC's prestigious career rushing list with 2,007 yards on 406 carries (4.9 average) with 14 TDs. He has 10 career 100-yard rushing games. For the second consecutive year, he is a USC captain, the first time that's happened at Troy since 1902 and 1903.
A candidate for Academic All-American honors, he was named to the GTE-Academic All-District VIII first team in 1998 and has made the Pac-10 All-Academic first team for 3 straight years (1996-98).
