LOS ANGELES - Former USC football player Ken Haslip has signed a contract with the Los Angeles Avengers, a new franchise with the Arena Football League that is slated to begin play next summer. Haslip is the Avengers' first-ever signing.
Haslip played defensive back at USC from 1995-98 and notched 64 tackles with three interceptions in his career. He also played sparingly at wide receiver.
"Ken Haslip is the prototype Arena Football League player," team owner and president Casey Wasserman said. "He has speed, a great deal of athletic ability and can play on both sides of the football. We will continue to sign players in the coming days, but this is definitely the direction that we want to go in."
After graduating from USC, Haslip was signed as a free agent by the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs. He played in three preseason games before being released during the final cut.
"I'm really excited to play indoors at the Staples Center," Haslip said. "This is great because I get to stay at home here in L.A. and I'm looking forward to playing both offense and defense. I haven't done that in the same game since high school."
