One of the nation’s most successful fundraisers, Don Winston helped the USC athletic department raise more than $500 million. He also saw the athletic endowment grow to more than $150 million (among the best in the nation). He helped raise funds for USC’s Galen Center, McKay Center, Loker Track Stadium, Uytengsu Aquatics Center and Merle Norman Stadium. He joined the Trojan athletic department as an associate athletic director in 1983, then was promoted to senior associate athletic director in 1989 before retiring in 2014. He oversaw the athletic development office, which included all support groups, major gifts and endowments. In 1999, he was named the university division Fundraiser of the Year by the National Association of Athletic Development Directors and received its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. He also handled day-to-day supervision of baseball, men's golf, tennis, volleyball and water polo. He came to USC in 1974 as director of development for the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, then was named assistant vice president for development in 1982. Before USC, he held development positions at Davidson, Whitman and Pomona. He played baseball at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
