A 3-year letterman (1924-25-26), he captained the Trojans’ first-ever NCAA championship team (in 1926). He was the 1926 NCAA discus champ, which was sandwiched by his Olympic gold medals in the event in 1924 in Paris and 1928 in Amsterdam (both were Olympic record throws). He also won Olympic gold in the shot put in 1924. He was inducted into the National track & field hall of fame in 1979 and the Ventura County Athletic Hall of Fame. After his athletic career, he became a dentist for 52 years in Los Angeles and Hollywood. At the time of his death on Oct. 1, 1994, at the age of 93, he was the oldest living Olympic track and field gold medalist.
