Bill Thom is regarded as one of the finest pitchers in USC history. He won All-American honors in 1959 when he won 10 games and had a 1.44 ERA. He was USC's first-ever College World Series MVP when he pitched for Troy's 1958 national champions. A 3-year letterman (1957-59), he won 23 games in his Trojan career. He was a 2-time All-Conference first teamer (1958-59) and made All-District VIII in 1958. He was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2024. He played minor league baseball with the Boston Red Sox. His son, Bill Jr., was an outfielder with the Trojans in 1982 and 1983.
