No. 3 USC Lets Loose On Lopes For 5-0 Sweep

The Women of Troy put a sweep in the books in their first match at the Outrigger Resorts Hawai’i Invitational
HONOLULU – The No. 3-ranked USC beach volleyball team (9-4) earned its third 5-0 sweep of the season with a win over No. 12 Grand Canyon (5-5) at the Outrigger Resorts Hawai'i Invitational on Queen's Beach on Saturday, March 17.
The courts went down in order with straight-set wins at courts one, two, and three. At the top court, junior Abril Bustamante and freshman Tina Graudina collected a 21-15, 21-10 win over Kelli Iverson and Molly Turner to get the Trojans started. At court two, senior Terese Cannon and freshman Sammy Slater knocked off Katie Pyles and Jessica Stansfield, 21-11, 21-17, for a 2-0 USC lead.
The clinching point came from court three as sophomore Joy Dennis and freshman Haley Hallgren defeated Jessica Clark and Hannah Towne, 21-19, 21-19. On courts four and five, USC pairs dropped first sets at both positions, but came back to win the back two to put the 5-0 sweep in the books.
On court four, junior Katrina Kernochan and senior Alexandra Poletto responded to a 21-18 loss in the first set to Bella Bauman and Taylor Jarzombek to turn in a dominant 21-14 win in the second and an unbelievable 15-1 win in the third. The fifth and final USC point was put up by seniors Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer as the duo defeated Emily Reinking and Jamie Walsh, 19-21, 23-21, 15-13.
In an exhibition match, freshmen Maja Kaiser and Peri Green took down Katie Sarber and Madi Relax, 21-17, 15-21, 15-11.
The Trojans turn around and must face No. 5-ranked tournament host Hawai'i (8-3) immediately. USC completes its first day at the Outrigger Resorts Hawai'i Invitational with a 2 p.m. HT (5 p.m. PT) dual against Nebraska.
