No. 3 USC Falls to No. 5 Hawai’i in 3-2 Finish

The Trojans and the Wahine played four three-set matches, but UH earned all three of its points in three-set wins
HONOLULU – The No. 3-ranked USC beach volleyball team (9-5) dropped a tough 3-2 decision to host No. 5 Hawai'i (9-3) on Queen's Beach in the 2018 Outrigger Resorts Hawai'i Invitational on Saturday, March 17. The Rainbow Wahine earned all three of their points in three-set wins to snap an eight-match losing streak to the Trojans.
In the only match not to go three sets, senior Terese Cannon and freshman Sammy Slater put a 21-18, 21-16 win over Emily Maglio and Ka'iwi Schucht in the books to take the first point of the dual.
USC won first sets on all five courts, but Hawai'i earned its first point with a win at court four where Ari Homayun and Amy Ozee overcame junior Katrina Kernochan and senior Alexandra Poletto for an 11-21, 21-16, 15-9 win. USC went ahead momentarily when junior Abril Bustamante and freshman Tina Graudina came up with a 21-19, 19-21, 15-7 win over Carly Kan and Laurel Weaver at No. 1.
UH evened the score at two-all from court three where Morgan Martin and Lea Monkhouse defeated USC's duo of sophomore Joy Dennis and freshman Haley Hallgren, 18-21, 21-19, 15-9. The final point went on the board from court five and secured the dual for the Wahine when Paige Dreeuws and Hannah Zalopany took down seniors Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer, 21-23, 21-14, 15-6.
USC completes its first day at the Outrigger Resorts Hawai'i Invitational with a 2 p.m. HT (5 p.m. PT) dual against Nebraska.
