USC incoming freshman Onyeka Okongwu was named California's Mr. Basketball for the 2019 season it was announced today (April 4). Okongwu also won the award in 2018 and becomes the fifth player in the CIF state title era to win the award in back-to-back seasons and the seventh since the award was established in 1950.
Okongwu averaged 27.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 4.3 blocks, 4.0 assists, while shooting 62 percent from the field and 77 percent from the free throw line. He lead Chino Hills (25-10) to its third Division I state title in his four seasons. In the 69-63 win in the 2019 title game against James Logan, Okongwu had a double-double of 26 points and 15 rebounds. This year he was also named the L.A. Times Player of the Year and to the All-CIF Southern Section Division I first team. Among the 2019 national recruit rankings, he is ranked No. 17 by ESPN.com, No. 20 by 247Sports and No. 28 by Rivals.com. He was also ranked as the No. 2 recruit in California behind incoming teammate Isaiah Mobley.
The other players to win California's Mr. Basketball in consecutive seasons in the CIF state title area were Tyson Chandler (2000-01), Aaron Gordon (2012-13), Jason Kidd (1991-92) and John Williams (1983-84).
