Sophomores Kaito Onishi and Issei Tanabe carded a 1-under 69 and a par 70, respectively, to lead the No. 6 USC men's golf team to a tie for third after the first round of The Goodwin at the Stanford G.C. on Thursday (March 28).
USC, which teed off in the afternoon wave of the 26-team field, combined for a 6-over 286, tied with California and eight back of first-round leader Washington (278). Host Stanford is one back of the Huskies while seven teams are within four strokes of Troy.
Onishi finished with four birdies that offset a triple on 6. His 69, tied for seventh and two back of the lead, was his third in the last four rounds and gives him nine rounds under 70 this season.
Tanabe managed par with five birdies, the last coming on 16 to even his round. He is tied for 11th. Senior Sam Kim, with three birdies today, is tied for 37th at 2-over 72.
Senior Justin Suh, with a rare off round despite starting with a birdie, is tied for 76th after his 5-over 75 that included a triple on 8. Junior Kyle Suppa is tied for 98th at 7-over 77.
USC will open the second round with an 8:25 a.m. start, paired with Oklahoma and Stanford.
