Women Of Troy Host No. 44 Illinois, Wednesday

This Week -- The 12th-ranked USC women's tennis team (10-3, 4-2 Pac-10) is coming off two Pac-10 wins last week over #26 Arizona, 6-2, and No. 10 Arizona State, 6-3. The Women of Troy have now won three of four match-ups with the Arizona schools. This week, the Trojans return home to host No. 44 Illinois on Wednesday, March 15, at 1:30 p.m. The match will be played at Marks Tennis Stadium.
USC vs. Illinois -- Wednesday's match will be the first meeting between Illinois and USC. The Illini are 4-7 overall this season after falling to No. 7 Duke , 6-3, on March 5. Illinois will face SMU on Tuesday, March 14, prior to traveling to USC.
The Trojans' Last Outing -- USC earned a 6-2 victory over No. 26 Arizona on Friday (March 10), extending the Wildcats five-match losing skid. The Trojans swept all six singles matches to ensure the victory. Tiffany Brymer earned her fourth-straight win and clinched USC's outcome by defeating Joanna Buczkowska, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. Arizona was able to earn two points with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions in doubles competition. The third doubles match was not played.
On Saturday (March 11), USC upset No. 10 ASU, 6-3, avenging an earlier loss to the Sun Devils in their first meeting in Tempe. In singles, USC earned three wins in straight sets at the No. 1, 2 and 4 positions. The Sun Devils earned their first point in the third match as Faye DeVera defeated Jacqui Boyd, 6-1, 6-3, breaking Boyd's 11-match win streak. The Women of Troy earned wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles to clinch the match victory.
USC News & Notes -- USC advanced to the USTA/ITA championship quarterfinals for the first time since 1997... The Trojans dropped one spot to No. 13 in the Feb. 23 ITA rankings... With the win over ASU, the Women of Troy are 2-3 against top-25 opponents... Entering the spring schedule, three of the four Trojans' ranked in the ITA fall rankings were freshman, Jewel Peterson, Anita Loyola, Tiffany Brymer (Doubles)... USC maintained its team ranking, finishing the 1999 season ranked 10th and starting 2000 10th.
Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien enters his fifth season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. After guiding the 1999 Trojans to a 21-9 overall record, and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAAs, he was named Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last eight years, he has compiled a 132-72 (.647) overall record and his teams have made four appearances in the NCAA tournament.
Next Up -- The Women of Troy will host No. 28 Fresno State on March 22 at 1:30 p.m., and No. 41 San Diego on March 25 at noon. Both matches will be played at Marks Tennis Stadium.
