LOS ANGELES - USC senior goalie Bernice Orwig, who led the Women of Troy to their first-ever women's water polo national title earlier this month, was named the National Player of the Year by U.S. Water Polo today. In addition, head coach Jovan Vavic was named National Coach of the Year. Vavic was also named National Co-Coach of the Year for leading the men's water polo team to its first-ever NCAA championship last December.
Six USC players were named All-Americans. Orwig, who had 239 saves, was joined on the first team by freshman utility player Aniko Pelle, who led Troy with 52 goals.
Sophomore 2-meter player Jennifer Durley made the All-American second team, while junior utility player Lisa Saenz garnered third team honors. Freshman 2-meter player Nina Wengst and freshman utility player Sandra Milicev were named to the honorable mention team.
The Women of Troy, who finished the year 30-2, lose only two seniors for the 2000 season.
