Trojans Fall in Opener to No. 2 Oregon State, 4-0

LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team dropped its opener with No. 2 Oregon State on Friday night, falling 4-0 to the Beavers.
The Trojans battled all night, but came up short against Oregon State starter Luke Heimlich, who tossed 8.1 scoreless innings. USC falls to 24-24 overall and 11-17 in Pac-12 play with the loss, while the Beavers move to 41-8-1 overall and 17-7-1 in conference action.
Kyle Hurt worked out of several jams throughout the night, but gave up two runs in both the second and seventh innings. Hurt scattered 10 hits and struck out five batters. Isaac Esqueda and Austin Manning each tossed scoreless relief innings to end the game.
Oregon State got an RBI single from Kyle Nobach and a squeeze bunt from Steven Kwan to score in the second. Nick Madrigal and Zak Taylor drove in runs in the seventh.
USC got its first hit in the sixth inning when Kaleb Murphy singled to break up a perfect game. Dillon Paulson and Brandon Perez singled in the eighth and were stranded, and then the Trojans put two runners on in the ninth, but a double play ended the game.
