May 16, 2018 | Track & Field, Features
USC senior Kendall Ellis was named to The Bowerman Post-Conference Championships Watch List, it was announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) today (May 16). The Bowerman is awarded annually at the end of the track and field season to the most outstanding track and field athlete.
Ellis won the Pac-12 women's 400m title with a world-leading, meet-record and school-record time of 49.99. She became just the second collegiate woman to run a sub-50 400m dash, joining record-holder Courtney Okolo who ran 49.71 in 2016. Ellis also placed fourth in the 200m with a time of 22.74 (+2.9w), and was part of USC's winning 4x100m and 4x400m relays at the Pac-12 Championships contested on May 12-13. Ellis accounted for 20 points in the team competition as USC's women won the team title for the first time since 1996. The 2018 Bowerman candidate Ellis was named the 2018 Pac-12 Women's Track Athlete of the Year, the fourth Trojan to earn the honor, joining Inger Miller (1994), Virginia Powell (2006) and Nia Ali (2011).
Ellis won the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field women's 400m title by setting a USA indoor record with a time of 50.34. She broke the previous USA record of 50.46 set by Phyllis Francis in 2014. Ellis also anchored USC's winning 4x400m relay team which posted a time of 3:27.45, which is also the fifth-fastest time ever by a collegiate women's quartet. USC holds the record of 3:27.03 set last year at the NCAA Indoor Championships, also anchored by Ellis.
The next Watch List will be announced on June 5 live on TrackTown Live, just ahead of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
