May 14, 2018 | Track & Field, Features
Trojans win 15 event titles; Women claim 1st team title since 1996
The USC women's team won its first conference title since 1996 and the men's team placed third at the 2018 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships hosted by Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. today (May 13). USC's women won eight of the 20 events over the two days, while the men's team won seven event-titles, all today. USC's women finished with 170 points, the second-most it has ever scored at the conference meet, while the men's team finished with 118 points. USC's women entered today in second place and the men's team began the day in seventh place.
Trojan men winning titles today were Nathan Bultman (hammer throw), Earnest Sears (high jump), Michael Norman (200m, 400m), Robert Ford (800m), Rai Benjamin (400m hurdles) and the 4x100m relay. USC's women winning event titles today were Chanel Brissett (100m hurdles), Kendall Ellis (400m), Twanisha "TeeTee" Terry (100m), Anna Cockrell (400m hurdles), the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. On Saturday, Courtney Corrin won the long jump and Lyndsey Lopes the high jump.
" Wow, what an exciting weekend. USC finding some really great surprises," said USC Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert. "I was really pleased with what coach Blockburger (Sheldon) did with the jumps. The women's high jump and women's long jump set up the meet as we had field event points ready to go for Sunday and all we had to do was add on to them from the track. Coach Watts (Quincy) and coach Hayes (Joanna) did an outstanding job in the sprints, hurdles and relays. We had 15 event championship wins, which has to be one of the best conference meets USC has ever had over the years. I was proud to be a part of and add to the great track and field tradition that USC has had over the years. Â
"Michael Norman had a historic performance. I'm not sure anyone has ever had a 44.40 in the 400m and then come back to run a 19.84 in the 200m, even though it was a little windy. We had a few nagging injuries. Ricky (Morgan) got a little tight, Barnum (Alex) cramped up in the prelim in the 100m, but he was jogging well today, so we'll get him back ready to go. Rai Benjamin had an outstanding performance in the hurdles as did the women's short hurdlers, We came in with the goal of scoring high, running your race, executing and using as much effort as you can. I was really proud of the team, they did all those things and it was a great weekend. It has been since 1996 that the women's team won the Pac-12 Championship, so I'm proud to be a part of history. Fight On!"

- Nathan Bultman got the day started in style for the Trojans by winning the men's hammer throw with a mark of 219-10 (67.01m), knocking off the defending champion Brock Eager of Washington State, who finished second at 218-1. Bultman is USC's 14th conference champion in the event and the Trojans have won the hammer throw title in six of the last nine season, the last time by Conor McCullough in 2015. Bultman earned USC 10 points in the men's team competition.
- Earnest Sears won the men's high jump title with a personal-best clearance of 7-2.50 (2.20m). That jump moved him from tied for seventh to sixth on USC's all-time list in the event. Sears earned USC's men's team 10 points. It was USC's 11th win in the men's high jump, more than any school, and first since Manjula Wijesekara won in 2010.
- The women's 4x100m relay team of Angie Annelus, Kendall Ellis, Deanna Hill and TeeTee Terry won the conference title with a time of 42.85. It was USC's 15th win in the event, more than any other Pac-12 school. USC's women earned 10 points for the win.
- The men's 4x100m relay team of Ricky Morgan Jr., Rai Benjamin, T.J. Brock and Zach Shinnick also won with a time of 39.38, as Shinnick ran down the Ducks' runner and held him off for a .03-second win. It was USC's conference-leading 16th win in the event. USC's men earned 10 points for the win.
- Chanel Brissett won the women's 100m hurdles title with a PR of 12.75 (+1.7) to move from sixth to fourth on USC's all-time list in the event. Taking second in the event was Dior Hall with a season-best time of 12.83, while Anna Cockrell was third with a PR of 12.88 (fifth on USC's all-time list), Mecca McGlaston was fifth with a PR of 13.06 to move into a tie for seventh on USC's all-time list and Lyndsey Lopes was seventh with a PR of 13.49. USC's hurdlers earned 30 points for the team competition.
- Kendall Ellis then won her second consecutive women's 400m title, this time with a PR which bettered her school record, a meet record and world-leading time of 49.99. Kaelin Roberts had a PR and bettered her USC freshman record with a time of 51.33 to place third. Kyra Constantine placed seventh with her best collegiate time of 52.59. The trio earned USC's women 18 points.
- Michael Norman won his first title of the day by running a PR of 44.40 to win the men's 400m race. That time moved him into second on USC's all-time list and is currently third in the world. Ricky Morgan Jr. finished third with a time of 46.23 and together with Norman earned USC's men 16 points.
- TeeTee Terry won the women's 100m dash title with a wind-aided PR of 10.96 (+2.6w). She became the first USC woman to win the 100m title at the conference meet since Carol Rodriguez in 2007, which was the end of a six-year winning streak for USC in the event. Deanna Hill took second with a time of 11.06, while Angie Annelus was fifth with a time of 11.30, Chanel Brissett was eighth with a time of 11.62 and Ky Westbrook was ninth with a time of 11.64. The USC women's team earned 23 points in the event.
- Robert Ford won the men's 800m race with a time of 1:49.77, earning USC's men 10 more points. Ford scored in the 800m race all four years at the Pac-12 Championships.
- Anna Cockrell won the women's 400m hurdles race with a time of 56.47, after placing second in the event last season. Shante Robinson placed seventh in the event with a time of 59.36. Cockrell and Robinson earned the Trojan women 12 points.
- Rai Benjamin blazed to victory in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 48.46, despite stumbling on the back stretch. His time is the collegiate leader, third in the world currently and moves him from 10th to second on USC's all-time list. Benjamin now only trails Olympic gold medalist Felix Sanchez on USC's all-time list. Cameron Samuel had a PR of 50.29 to place second in the event, with the pair earning the Trojans 18 points.
- USC's women placed second-fifth in the women's 200m dash, with Deanna Hill placing second with a time of 22.49 (+2.9w), Angie Annelus third with a time of 22.70, Kendall Ellis fourth with a time of 22.74 and TeeTee Terry fifth with a time of 22.81. The 23 points they earned almost clinched the meet for the Trojans as it opened up a 22-point lead with just the 5000m race and the 4x400m relay remaining.
- Michael Norman closed out the running at the meet for the USC men by winning the 200m with a wind-aided PR of 19.84 (+2.8w). He became the third person to ever complete the 200m-400m double at the conference meet, with the others being Trojans Bryshon Nellum (2013) and Jerome Davis (1999). Ricky Morgan Jr. had a time of 22.02 to place eighth and together with Norman earned USC 11 more points.
- After the Oregon women only earned eight points in the 5000m race, USC had clinched the meet, but that didn't stop them from running and winning the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:30.45. That time ranks ninth on USC's all-time list. USC ran a team of Roberts, Cockrell, Hill and Ellis.
- USC elected not to push things and run the men's 4x400m relay at the end of the meet with several of its athletes a little dinged up or having run multiple races already.
- T.J. Brock placed third in the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.21 (+2.9w), after finishing fourth in the event a year ago. He earned USC's men six more points.
- Dominic Smallwood, who placed third in the long jump yesterday, finished fourth in the triple jump today with a best leap of 50-8.75/15.46m (+2.6w).
- Nick Ponzio placed sixth and Nathan Bultman seventh in the men's discus throw competition. Ponzio had a best mark of 174-3 (53.11m) and Bultman had a best throw of 171-10 (52.39m). They picked up five points for the men in the team competition.
- Michael Gonzalez took eighth place in the men's pole vault competition with a clearance of 16-6.50 (5.04m). He went out at 16-10.25/5.14m which would have been a slight PR. He earned the USC men's team another point.
- Breana Jemison, who placed sixth in the shot put yesterday, competed in the women's discus throw competition today and placed 14th with a season-best mark of 150-5 (45.86m).
- Chloe Berry ran 4:30.51 to place ninth in the women's 1500m race, just one spot out of scoring for the Trojans.
