USC Blasts Arizona State 10-1 to Even Series
April 07, 2018 | Baseball, Features
Solomon Bates tossed a strong 7.2 innings in his second start of the year and six Trojans had multi-hit days as USC moves to 15-12 overall and 4-7 in Pac-12 play after the win, while Arizona State falls to 14-17 overall and 5-6 in conference action.
The Trojans had three, three-run innings on the day, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Ben Ramirez and a two-run double by Chase Bushor. Ramirez would later hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to make it 9-0 USC. It was the freshman's first collegiate home run.
The visiting Trojans also put up three runs in the top of the fourth, scoring on doubles by Sabol and Lars Nootbaar, and a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Perez. Matthew Acosta capped the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth.
Bates did the rest of the job on the mound, striking out a career-high nine batters while giving up just three hits and two walks. He was credited with the lone run after walking a runner prior to exiting the game with two outs in the eighth. He only allowed one runner past first base while he was in the game.
The Trojans put up the impressive offensive numbers off of ASU ace Eli Lingos, who was coming off a complete-game shutout his last time out, and had given up just one run in his last 24.2 innings pitched.
