Gabby Smith Named Pac-12 Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year

USC senior Gabby Smith was named the 2018 Pac-12 Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced today (April 24).
Academically, Smith excells in the classroom. Majoring in accounting, Smith boasts a 3.493 cumulative GPA. She was accepted into BYU's Accountancy – Tax master's program and will begin her graduate studies in the fall. The two-time Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team member is also USC's female recipient of the Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarship.
On the court, senior co-captain Smith leads the Women of Troy. The 2017 All-Pac-12 First Team performer and 2016 ITA Doubles All-American has been a top-50 national player in singles this year. She has posted a 22-13 singles record highlighted by victories over five opponents ranked in the ITA top 16. Smith teamed with Becca Weissmann at the No. 2 doubles position, to post an 11-8 overall record this year, totaling 52 dual match victories in her career.
In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport's regular season. The athletic accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in the voting for the award.
A Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be named in each of the Pac-12's 24 sponsored sports: baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, beach volleyball, men's cross country, women's cross country, football, men's golf, women's golf, women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, men's rowing, women's rowing, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, men's track & field, women's track & field, women's volleyball, and wrestling.
Smith and the USC women's tennis team begin their Pac-12 Championship tournament campaign tomorrow at 11 a.m. PT in Ojai, Calif. as the No. 6 seeded Trojans take on No. 11 seed Arizona in the first round.
