The Women of Troy were stunned by the Golden Bears on Sunday morning at the Pac-12 North Invitational
SEATTLE – The fourth-ranked USC beach volleyball team (19-10) fell by a 3-2 count to 13th-ranked California (19-5) at the Pac-12 North Invitational on Sunday, April 15, on Alki Beach. The win for the Golden Bears makes them just the seventh team ever to register a dual victory over the Women of Troy. USC fell to 5-1 all-time in meetings against Cal.
The Trojans registered the first two points of the dual from the Nos. 1 and 3 positions, but Cal fought back and won a three-setter at court four to seal the deal. At the top, junior Abril Bustamante and freshman Tina Graudina earned a 21-10, 21-9 win over Alexia Inman and Mima Mirkovic. At three, senior Terese Cannon and freshman Sammy Slater defeated Bryce Bark and Madison Dueck, 21-11, 21-17, to put the Women of Troy on top, 2-0, in the dual.
Cal got on the board from court five when Grace Campbell and Maddie Micheletti put the Trojans on notice with a 21-14, 21-17 win over USC's senior duo of Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer. Jessica Gaffney and Iya Lindahl put a 21-18, 21-19 win in the books over sophomores Joy Dennis and Cammie Dorn to knot the score at two-all.
At court four, freshman Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto took a 21-19 win over Mia Merino and Caroline Schafer in the first set, but the Bears clawed back to get a 21-13 win in the second and evened the match. Merino and Schafer put the comeback upset victory on ice when they completed a 15-13 win over the Women of Troy in the decisive third set.
In a non-counting match, freshman Maja Kaiser and junior Katrina Kernochan took down Camille Stepanof and Abby Waldburger in straight sets, 21-15, 21-16.
USC concludes its run at the Pac-12 North Invitational with a dual against Oregon (2-7) at 1 p.m. PT.
