Jemison Set USC Shot Put Record At California Collegiate

Breana Jemison set the USC women's shot put record, Nick Ponzio won the men's shot put and Cassidy Palka won the women's high jump to lead the Trojans at the California Collegiate Invitational in La Jolla, Calif. today (March 31). Â
- Jemison led wire-to-wire in the women's shot put, opening with a mark of 51-8.25/15.75m to take the lead and closing with a school-record mark of 57-7.75/17.57m. Jemison broke the school record of 57-7.50/17.56m set by Karen Freberg in 2006. Jemison opened her outdoor season by moving into seventh on USC's all-time list, moved to sixth last week and set the school standard today. Jemison ranks second among collegiate shot putters this season. Jemison had three throws in her series of over 55-5.
- Ponzio won the men's shot put with a best mark of 59-9.50/18.22m. After a foul in the first round, he took the lead with his second throw and never was challenged the rest of the way.
- Cassidy Palka won the women's high jump with a clearance of 5-6.00/1.68m. She was clean through that height and went out at 5-8.00/1.73m.
- Joy McArthur placed third in the women's hammer throw with a best mark today of 196-8/59.95m. Â
- Jason Kim placed 10th in the men's hammer throw with a best mark of 144-3/43.97.
- Jemison came back to place 14th in the women's discus throw with a best toss of 121-4/37.00.
- Ponzio then came back to take fifth in the men's discus throw with a season-best mark of 162-6/49.55m.
- Colette Putnam placed 15th in the women's javelin competition with a best throw of 106-1/32.34m.
- Michael Gonzalez no-heighted in the men's pole vault. Gonzalez did not enter the competition until 16-0.75/4.90m, and missed on his three attempts.
