Stanford Fights Back To Beat USC 59-55 At Galen Center
January 19, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Aliyah Mazyck and Kristen Simon combined for 37 points in a tough Pac-12 loss for the Trojans.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team led Stanford by as much as 14 points in the third quarter before the visiting Cardinal staged a successful comeback to steal away a 59-55 victory over the Trojans tonight at Galen Center. The game was locked up 55-55 in the final minute, but Stanford scored to take the lead and then converted off a Trojan turnover to secure the Pac-12 win. USC goes to 13-5 overall and to 3-4 in Pac-12 play with its second loss of the season to Stanford, which improved to 12-7, 6-1.
USC forced eight turnovers out of the Cardinal in the first 10 minutes of action, but it was seven Trojan turnovers in the fourth that helped pull things into Stanford's control late. Stanford shot 54 percent from the floor in those last 10 minutes to outpace USC's 30 percent in the final stretch as the Cardinal stole into the lead with under three minutes to go. The Cardinal would finish out the game shooting 41.8 from the floor to USC's 37 percent. USC committed 21 turnovers to 18 by Stanford — just the second time this season that the Trojans have had more turnovers than their opponent. USC did lead on the boards 34-32 and went 15-of-21 from the free-throw line compared to 8-of-16 by Stanford.
The Trojans received a game-high 20 points from Aliyah Mazyck, whose 3-point tally rose to 98 career threes with her five 3-pointers knocked down tonight. Kristen Simon also hit double digits with 17 points — 12 of which accounted for all of USC's scoring in the second quarter — to go with a team-high eight rebounds. She also nabbed a career-high four steals, while Sadie Edwards contributed a career-high four blocks. Stanford was led by DiJonai Carrington's 15 points along with 12 from Brittany McPhee. The Cardinal had nine players score in the win, while USC had five scorers.
Stanford manufactured a 6-0 run to take an 11-5 lead with 2:15 to go in the first, only to see USC force three straight turnovers out of the Cardinal that were each followed by a 3-pointer nailed by Aliyah Mazyck. As Mazyck single-handedly carried USC on a 9-0 run, the Trojans finished up the first frame up 14-11. In the second, Kristen Simon stepped up and served up all 12 of USC's points in that 10-minute stretch to keep the Trojans in stride with Stanford and a step ahead throughout for a 26-23 lead at the break.
USC got out of the gates in the second half in crafting a 14-3 scoring surge with five different Trojans contributing to the run, which carried USC to a 40-26 lead with 5:30 on the clock. Stanford would get a couple of 3-pointers to land around another bucket in the paint from Simon to tug closer to the Trojans, getting the deficit down to single digits after a trip to the stripe made it 44-36 USC with 2:35 on the clock. That margin would get clipped to four points thanks to Stanford's Alanna Smith, who scored down low and later ended the quarter with a three that made it a 45-41 USC lead entering the fourth.
After a silent first 2:30 of scoring action in the fourth, Mazyck broke through and converted a three-point play to boost USC ahead 48-41. The Trojans would struggle to keep possession in the next stretch, and Stanford took advantage. As the foul count climbed for USC, the Cardinal converted a 12-1 run to move into the lead for the first time since the first quarter, up 55-51 with 2:15 to go. A 3-pointer from Sadie Edwards got it to 55-54 with 1:55 remaining, and she'd level it at 55-55 with the back end of a trip to the line with 45 seconds to go. Stanford struck back with a take to the hoop, then made the most of a USC turnover to finish out a 59-55 win over the Trojans.
The Trojans now turn to seek some redemption for a road loss to California taken last month. USC hosts the No. 21 Golden Bears in a 1 p.m. clash on Pac-12 Networks on Sunday (Jan. 21) at Galen Center.
