No. 12 Trojans Defeat Santa Clara 2-1 in Come-From-Behind Fashion
September 08, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
Second-half goals from freshmen Savannah DeMelo and Tara McKeown were the difference.
LOS ANGELES – Freshmen phenoms Tara McKeown and Savannah DeMelo came through for the Trojans once again, each finding the back of the net in the second half to lead the No. 12 Trojans to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Santa Clara on Friday afternoon at McAlister Field.
On the victory, head coach Keidane McAlpine said, "Today was a big win for us, coming from behind and showing some toughness in doing that was important, especially after the loss last Sunday. I think we had a much better start, but we still need to work on our competitiveness, sharpness in our passes and finishing in the final third. All in all, we just need to build on the win going forward against Iowa State on Sunday."
The Trojans (3-1-0) outshot the Broncos (2-4-1) 23-15 in the match, but were trailing early after the defense broke down and surrendered a goal to Bronco forward Kelsey Turnbow in the 25th minute.
Trojan goalkeeper Kaylie Collins came through with three save in the first half, including two big saves after Turnbow's goal to keep the deficit to just one.
As in past games, the Trojans regrouped at halftime and came out strong, overall outshooting the Broncos 14-8 in the half. Freshman midfielder DeMelo finished off the equalizer for the Trojans in the 58th minute, as junior Leah Pruitt made a strong run down the right flank and delivered a perfect cross into the six-yard box to a streaking DeMelo who was able to one-touch the ball into the back of the in stride for her second goal of the year.
With the game tied 1-1, the Trojans once again saw a freshmen find the back of the net, this time it was McKeown with the eventual game-winner. The attack mounted out of the back, as defender Ally Prisock found fellow defender Jalen Woodward, who delivered the forward pass to McKeown near the top of the box, who went with a nifty turn and delivered a beautiful shot to the left side of the goal, finishing things off for her second goal of the year in the 66th minute of play.
With a 2-1 lead, the Trojans and Broncos continued to battle, down to the final minute of play, as the Broncos were knocking on the door, but the Trojan defense was able to stand strong to finish off the come-from-behind win.
Collins got the win for the Trojans, finishing with a season and career high four saves on the year. Melissa Lowder took the loss for Santa Clara, tallying four saves of her own.
The Trojans remain at home this weekend, hosting Iowa State at 12 p.m. PT on Sunday, Sept. 10. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks. Buy your tickets at usctrojans.com/tickets.
