Stanford Steals The Lead From USC Women In New Year’s Eve Bash
December 31, 2017 | Women's Basketball, Features
Sadie Edwards led the way for the Trojans with 20 points, but the Cardinal held their ground at Maples Pavilion.
PALO ALTO, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team gave another tough Pac-12 opponent all it could handle today in a New Year's Eve bash in Palo Alto. The Trojans had the halftime advantage, but host Stanford had the depth and hot-shooting to make a move into the lead, and the Cardinal would finish out a 72-65 win over the visiting Trojans. USC goes to 10-3 overall and 0-2 in Pac-12 play with the loss. Stanford improves to 8-6, 2-0.
The lead switched directions five times in the first half, with USC leading by as much as 12 during the first quarter before Stanford regrouped and moved ahead in the second. USC would be undeterred, however, fighting back and stealing away the advantage late in the frame to lead it 34-33 at halftime. USC was shooting 38.7 percent from the floor, while Stanford was ahead at 40 percent while both teams landed four threes apiece in those first 20 minutes. The Cardinal would heat up further in the second half to make its move into the lead. USC would wrap the game shooting 35.5 percent from the floor to trail Stanford's 45.5 percent effort. Stanford also won out on the boards 41-31, while both teams made 14 free throws and Stanford hit eight 3-pointers to USC's seven.
The Trojans were pace by Sadie Edwards with 20 points on the day, with Aliyah Mazyck nearing a double-double performance on 18 points and eight rebounds. Minyon Moore also hit double digits with 17 points to go with five assists. Stanford received a game-high 21 points from Brittany McPhee to go with 13-point outings from Alanna Smith and Kiana Williams.
Stanford struck first in this one, but the Trojans showed their resolve in firing off an 8-0 run to lead it 8-2 early. With Sadie Edwards landing a pair of threes in the frame and the Trojan defense interrupting the Cardinal, USC was able to build out a 20-8 lead with 3:10 to go in the first. Stanford would end the frame with a 7-0 surge, leaving it as a 20-15 USC advantage after 10 minutes of play. The lead would slip out of the Trojans' hands as Stanford staged an 8-0 rally to go up 31-27 with 3:20 left in the half. USC kept coming, though, as Minyon Moore drained a three for a spark. Stanford got back to the line for two, only to see USC's Kristen Simon and Jordan Adams wrap the half with buckets to give the Trojans a 34-33 halftime lead.
Stanford would sneak into the lead early in the third thanks to a couple 3-pointers. Then the Cardinal manufactured another 7-0 run to pad its lead to eight points. USC carved that down to three later after Edwards planted a pair of free throws and Jordan Adams hit Kristen Simon down low, making it 50-47 with 3:05 left in the third. That margin would hold by the close of the frame, with Stanford up 53-50 entering the fourth. There, the Cardinal was able to grow its lead to nine entering the final minute as Brittany McPhee scored back-to-back buckets, making it 70-61 Stanford. USC kept the pressure on and got it to 70-64 with 19 ticks to go, but Stanford was able to get the job done from the line to wrap a 72-65 Cardinal win.
The Trojans now turn to host their first Pac-12 games of the season, returning to Galen Center to take on Oregon at 8 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 5) and then facing Oregon State at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 7).
