Haley led the Women of Troy to 17 consecutive appearances in the NCAA championship tournament
LOS ANGELES – Mick Haley will not return to USC after 17 seasons as the women's volleyball head coach, Trojan athletic director Lynn Swann announced today (Dec. 16).
"We thank Mick for 17 outstanding years of success and accomplishment at USC and we wish him well," said Swann. "He is an icon in the world of volleyball. He brought our program many memorable moments, including getting to the brink of the NCAA Final Four this season, and he developed elite student-athletes.
"As we transition into the future of USC women's volleyball, the outlook is strong. The talent level is high both on our returning roster and with our incoming signees. We expect a new coach to build off of the success of this past season."
Swann said that USC will begin an immediate nationwide search for Haley's replacement.
The 2017 USC team went 25-10 and lost in five sets at No. 3-ranked Florida in an NCAA regional final.
Haley guided the Women of Troy to a 435-119 (.785) record in his 17 seasons (2001-17), including a pair of NCAA championships (2002-03), six NCAA Final Four appearances and 17 consecutive NCAA Tournament berths. He was the 2003 AVCA Division I Coach of the Year when the Trojans went 35-0.
Haley came to USC after guiding the U.S. Women's National Team to a fourth place finish at the 2000 Olympics. Before that, he spent 17 years (1980-96) as the Texas women's head coach, winning two national titles.
While at Kellogg Community College (1973-79), he won six national junior college championships (two by the women and four by the men).
In 41 years as a head coach, he had a 1,305-339-1 (.794) record. He coached three National Players of the Year, two Honda Sports Award winners (including a Broderick Award winner), two National Freshmen of the Year, 47 All-Americans and 115 All-Conference players.
He is a member of the AVCA, Junior College Coaches, Texas Women's Athletics and Ball State Halls of Fame.
