USC Athletics’ Graduation Success Rate Hits All-Time High Fourth Year In Row
November 08, 2017 | USC Athletics, Features
LOS ANGELES--For the fourth consecutive year, the Graduation Success Rate of USC student-athletes is at an all-time high—86%—according to data released today (Nov. 8) by the NCAA.
The 2017 GSR measures how many student-athletes in the classes of 2007 through 2010 graduated within six years of their enrollment.
That 86% figure, which is 18 percentage points higher than it was 10 years ago, comes on the heels of USC's previous-best rates of 80% in 2014, 81% in 2015 and 83% in 2016.
Nine of the 18 USC sports whose data was tracked by the NCAA had a GSR this year above 90%, including five with a perfect 100%: defending NCAA champion women's soccer (100%), men's golf (100%), men's and women's tennis (both 100%), women's rowing (100%), women's water polo (96%), women's swimming (96%), women's basketball (92%) and men's volleyball (91%).
All of those teams except women's basketball and men's volleyball recorded all-time high GSR rates for their programs, as did football (73%).
Twelve USC teams saw their scores either improve from last year or stay the same: men's golf (+20 percentage points), men's tennis (+20), men's and women's track (both +13), women's tennis (+12), football (+6), women's rowing (+4), men's water polo (+1), women's swimming (+1), women's soccer (even), women's basketball (even) and women's water polo (even).
"We are delighted that our student-athletes continue to perform well in the classroom," said Dr. Magdi El Shahawy, USC senior associate athletic director in charge of Student-Athlete Academic Services. "There is a culture of academic success in our athletic department and it is evident when data like this comes out. I congratulate our student-athletes on the dedication and hard work they put into their academics and I also thank our coaches for supporting their student-athletes' academic pursuits.
"Our goal not only is to see our graduation rates continue to rise, but to continue to improve upon the services and tools we offer our student-athletes to help them have successful lives once they leave USC. Our Stevens Academic Center and supporters like Mark Stevens play a vital role in the academic success of our student-athletes."
