USC sophomore outside hitter Khalia Lanier won the first and the final Offensive Player of the Week award of 2017
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball sophomore outside hitter Khalia Lanier (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 20-26, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Nov. 27. It is Lanier's third award this season—her fourth conference weekly award, which includes a Freshman of the Week nod in 2016—and represents USC's 74th all-time weekly award.
Â
UCLA junior libero Zana Muno was chosen for the Defensive Player of the Week honor and the Bruins' outside hitter Jenny Mosser was named the Freshman of the Week.
Â
Lanier's award is USC's fifth offensive award this season including two by senior opposite hitter Brittany Abercrombie in October. Junior libero Victoria Garrick received the defensive award on Sept. 25.
Â
As the Trojans' go-to pin-hitter, Lanier produced her seventh and eighth double-doubles of the season and now has 24-career double-double matches. She helped the Women of Troy to a 3-1 win over No. 24-ranked Oregon on the road with a 13-kill and 11-dig performance. She then matched her career high with 27 kills in a three-set loss to No. 19 UCLA where she averaged 9.0 kills per set while hitting .364. Lanier also scored 12 digs against the Bruins for the double-double.
Â
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Pac-12 began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the seventh year (since 2011) that the Conference has announced separate offensive, defensive, and freshman honorees. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution. Since 2011, USC players have received 18 offensive awards, 10 defensive awards, and 14 freshman honors.
Â
14th-ranked USC (22-9) received the 10th seed into the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship and will host first- and second-round matches at Galen Center this week. The Trojans open their tournament run against Southland Conference champion Central Arkansas (27-4) on Friday (Dec. 1) at 7 p.m. PT. In the other first-round match, San Diego (24-4) faces Louisiana State (20-9) at 5 p.m. Winners of the two first-round matches will meet on Saturday (Dec. 2) at 5 p.m. in the second round. All matches will be streamed live on the USC Pac-12+ platform at http://www.pac-12.com/live/usc.
