ASU Wednesday: Notes
October 25, 2017 | Football, USC Ripsit Blog, Features
The Trojans hit the practice field on a scorching hot afternoon in Los Angeles to prepare for Arizona State.
- Full injury report, per USC head coach Clay Helton: TE Josh Falo (held with foot injury), RB Stephen Carr (held with foot injury), LB Porter Gustin (held with foot injury), WR Steven Mitchell Jr. (held with shoulder injury), DT Josh Fatu (held with concussion), CB Iman Marshall (held with knee injury), OT Chuma Edoga (held with stomach bug), DE Christian Rector (left practice with hand injury).
- In positive injury news, long snapper Damon Johnson has completed concussion protocol and is cleared to play on Saturday.
- Helton said he doesn't yet know the severity of Rector's injury, but said that if he's unable to play, LB Jordan Iosefa could move outside and LBs Oluwole Betiku Jr. and Connor Murphy could see increased reps on the edge as well.
- CB Isaiah Langley (pictured) is ready to step up in the wake of Marshall's injury. Langley acknowledged his mistake in giving up a touchdown against Notre Dame and explained his intent to get better this week. "I can play them a little bit better and that's what I plan on doing from now on," he said. "That's what football is about though. You have some mistakes and you come back next week and you work on it."
- Langley is watching film like a starter, and has picked up on a number of ASU's tendencies on offense. "They like to do a lot of gimmicky plays on first and second down, as far as screens," he said. "Their wide receiver No. 1 is a pretty good wide receiver. I don't like to give the opponent too much credit, but No. 10 is a fast guy."
- USC defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast explained that in the wake of Marshall's injury, Ajene Harris has been practicing at outside corner alongside Langley instead of his usual nickel spot, because the staff is comfortable with Ykili Ross at nickel.
- Freshman Brandon Pili will likely get his second career start in place of Fatu. While USC had trouble stopping the run against Notre Dame, defensive line coach Kenechi Udeze has faith in his young nose tackle. "I think Pili has shown great promise," he said. "He's done a really good job for an 18-year-old ... I think he has a very very bright upside because of his athletic ability and his God-given ability."
- While the Trojans are focused on getting their defense prepared for ASU, they also know that the Sun Devil defense is a force to be reckoned with, holding its last two opponents to an average of 8.5 points and forcing four turnovers vs. Utah. "They've gotten better from week to week as a defense," Helton said. "They really caused havoc against both Washington, Oregon and last week against Utah ...They're playing at a high level, definitely."
